The external study sponsor may be an individual, and such studies are sometimes referred to as investigator-sponsored studies or investigator-initiated studies. The study sponsor may also be an institution or agency.

The Indivior Independent Medical Education Grants program provides support for high quality, independent third-party educational initiatives in the United States that are designed to address healthcare professional education, quality, and performance gaps.
